Dorothy Jayne Potratz Settje, 82, of Lynchburg, VA, died Saturday, November 02, 2013. She was the wife of the late Harry Gerhardt Settje.
Born Thursday, December 25, 1930, in Sumner, IA, Dorothy was a daughter of the late Wilfred Potratz and the late Hazel Moser Potratz.
Dorothy is survived by three sons: Roger Settje and his wife, Lisa, of Lynchburg; Kenneth Settje and his wife, Paulette, of Forest; Keith Settje and his wife, DeAnna, of Lynchburg; a daughter in-law, Athena Settje, of Waverly, IA; seventeen grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; a sister in-law, Carol Potratz, of Kansas City, KS; a sister, Margaret Lalk, of Hawkeye, IA; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Harry (March 16, 2000), son, Gordon (August 8, 2003), brother, Lorimer Potratz (June 12, 1999) and brother in law, Herman Lalk (October 22, 2013).
Dorothy was a loving wife, mother, and grandma. She was a charter member of First Baptist Church, Sumner, IA with years of service teaching Sunday school and playing the piano. Her sincere desire was that others know Jesus Christ as their personal Savior. Dorothy attended Sioux Falls College and Upper Iowa University. She taught fifth grade in Steamboat Rock, IA. Dorothy and Harry met through relatives and they were married at Little Brown Church on June 18, 1952. She devoted her life to raising her sons and often opened her home to those in physical and spiritual need. Dorothy worked as a CNA at Palmer Memorial Hospital in West Union, Iowa. Lynchburg, VA became her home in 2007, and she entered The Summit in 2008.
The family wishes to express deep appreciation and sincere thanks to the staff of The Summit for their friendship, kindness, and care of Dorothy in the final years of her life.
A Celebration of Dorothy’s life will be conducted at 3:00 PM, Thursday, November 7, 2013, at Redeeming Grace Baptist Church, Lynchburg, with Pastor Michael O’Brien officiating. The family with receive friends at the church on Thursday from 2-2:45 and again following the service. A memorial service will also be held at First Baptist Church, Sumner, IA, on Sunday, December 8, 2013 at 3:00PM.
